The 2026 Championship Tour (CT) season is just around the corner, and for Ítalo Ferreira, it carries a profound new meaning. During a World Surf League event in Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday, the Olympic Gold Medalist shared his expectations for a year that promises to be a turning point—both in the water and at home.
A New Motivation: Baby Martin
While his drive used to come from the desire to change his family’s life, today, his fuel has a name: Martin. Having become a father three months ago, Ítalo discussed how the arrival of his son with partner Sofia has completely transformed his competitive mindset.
"Now, the motivation is him. It completely changes the feeling of being in the water. In the past, I was trying to change my family's life; today, I am dedicated to building one," the champion revealed.
After the initial challenge of navigating a new routine, Ítalo says he feels more mature and ready to balance the focus of an elite athlete with his role as a father.
Technical Strategy: Eyes on the Lefts
The 2026 calendar brought changes that favor the Brazilian star's surfing style. With the return of the rankings-based points system (no more one-day finals) and the inclusion of more left-hand waves, the "goofy-footer" (surfing with his right foot forward) sees a clear path to utilize his natural aggression and flair.

Elite Training: Ítalo has been focusing on wave pool sessions, using repetition to sharpen his maneuvers and build confidence before hitting the ocean.

Hungry for the Title: After coming close over the last few years with several runner-up and third-place finishes, he is aiming for the top spot. "This year, I believe everything being built in the circuit has a great chance of pushing me toward my biggest goal."
The Storm Continues
Regarding the evolution of the "Brazilian Storm," Ítalo welcomed rising talents like Mateus Herdy and celebrated the return of Samuel Pupo to the main tour. For him, Brazil remains the powerhouse to beat on the global stage.
The tour officially kicks off on April 1st at Bells Beach, Australia, but Ítalo’s heart is already set on Saquarema, where the Vivo Rio Pro is expected to stop the country once again.
